WINTER SEASON - 2010/2011
See the NEWS page for latest reports.
7th April - 3rd Team won at home to Dorchester 4 ~ 4-1
- Dan lost 1-3
- Andy lost 3-2
- Brian won 3-0
- Tom won 3-1
- Josh won 3-2
The last match lived up to expectations. Brian started proceedings with a comfortable win, ruthlessly exploiting his opponent’s lack of mobility. He even smiled once, presumably pleased with his opponent’s discomfort. Tom followed in his usual style. Quirky shots occasionally confused the balcony never mind his opponent. Andy won more comfortably than the score suggests, contriving to lose points with mistakes and poor shot selection until the fifth game when he finally managed to play sensible squash. With the match already won, there followed two excellent games. Josh Altoft, making his senior team debut and stepping in at short notice, won a tight five-setter. Nerves and inexperience cost him points against a seasoned opponent. His speed, fitness and natural racket skill prevailed. Dan, pushed up to the number one spot, fought hard to win a marathon first game 10-9. It was to be a single point earned against a good, young opponent who took the next three games.
An exhibition game followed, featuring Stuart Scourfield against Marcus Courtaux. The Dorchester man won 3-1 with a typical display of fitness and speed. Stuart stayed competitive until the final game when he discovered the disadvantage of playing an opponent half his age.
The evening ended with excellent socialising, oiled by the captain’s port. Janet, recovering from her operation in hospital, was missed. We dedicate our hangovers to her worthy captaincy. (AG)
29th March - 2nd Team lost away at West Hnats 3 ~ 2-3
- Ross lost 1-3
- Allan won 3-2
- Mark won 3-2
- Anthony lost 0-3
- Dan lost 1-3
24th March - 3rd Team lost at home to BSC 5 ~ 1-4
- Richard Lost 2-3
- Dan lost 0-3
- Andy lost 0-3
- Brian won 3-2
- Lin lost 0-3
B’mth Squash club brought over a strong side for last nights game.
Richard came up against a young player that has not lost a match yet, and who looked like he was going to cruse to a victory after the first game but Richard had other plans going into the second game he got his shots tighter and surprised the team with his drop shot that helped to win this vital game, he then narrowly lost the 3rd won the fourth to set him self up for the decider but unfortunately his opponent tightened up his game and forced Richard onto the back foot. The 3~2 loss got 2 good points for the team.
Lin stepped in at the last moment and came up against another young whippersnapper who’s unorthodox swing had every body guessing were the ball was going. Lin came very close to winning the second but a few lucky shots from her opponent brought them level at 8 all, Lin’s skill moved him around the court, but he just got a racket onto each ball and won the next 2 points. The 3rd was the same Lin played a winning shot but he just got there, even he apologized for shots that went off in a different direction.
Dan 0~3 lost against the very experienced Mark Wadsley, this was a hard fought game and Dan was unlucky not to get the second losing 8~10 , Dan started off well in the 3rd but Mark changed tactics by taking the ball earlier to shorten the game and to stop the long rallies which Dan usually won.
Andy lost 0~3, he started off slowly but gradually started to get the better of his opponent, again a Weymouth player had a chance to get a game losing 8~10 in the 3rd
In the last game of the night Brian came up against a player that had only lost 2 of his games this season and a full balconey of verbal spectators, the players did not disappoint, Brian took the first 9/6 lost the 2nd 7/9 won the 3rd 10/8 lost the 4th 4/9 the 5th game seesawed as both players fought for each point neither being able to dominate. The long rallies had the players trying to out maneuver each other and at 8 all both players were unable to secure the winning points. Brian got the first break though at 9~8 but it took him 3 attempts to get the winning point and the only win of the night
A good team effort against the team that could win this division. Food and a good real ale finished the evening off nicely.
17th Marc - 1st Team lost at home to West Hants 2 ~ 0-5
Match conceded
17th March - 3rd Team lost away at Hamworthy 2 ~ 0-5
- Richard Lost 0-3
- Dan lost 1-3
- Andy lost 1-3
- Brian lost 1-3
- Lin lost 0-3
The match at Hamworthy was not the most enjoyable in squash terms with our weakened unit up against their strongest. At 5, Lin encountered Peter Foulger who has played at 3 or 4 for most of the season. Lin played well and had Peter seriously rattled in the second game. She could not quite convert her advantage into a win. Brian had an off-night against an opponent that he would expect to beat. Andy ground out a long first game against a young, fit opponent but the physical cost of winning it destroyed his chances in the following games. Dan played well against a quality opponent whose game was just that bit tighter. Richard gave his all but was simply out-played by a superior player. All five of us were below par (health, injury, fatigue etc.). The stretched club playing resources meant that no reserves were available. The post-match hospitality was excellent and the drive home had added interest because of the new road opened on the day.
15th March - 2nd Team lost away to Ferndown 3 ~ 0-5
Match conceded
10th Marc - 1st Team lost at home to BSC 3 ~ 2-3
- Sam won 3-1
- Rob lost 1-3
- Allan lost 1-3
- Mark won 3-2
- Richard lost 0-3
8th March - 3rd Team lost away at DLR 3 ~ 2-3
- Stuart won 3-0
- Andy lost 0-3
- Brian lost 0-3
- Dan won 3-0
- Janet lost 0-3
This was an uneventful match as all matches were decided in 3 games.
Dan over powered his opponent. Brian just could not get into his game. My opponent soon worked out that I was not that mobile and either powered it pass me or dropped it. Stuart moved his opponent around the court so much that he hurt his calf and had to concede after the first game. The match now at 2 all in such a short time, we ended up waiting for Andy's opponent to arrive (secretly hoping he wouldn't arrive to get a win off of them) leaving the courts available for some extra games that were fun. Eventually he turned up to take the match 3~0 with too many skillful volleys and the 3~2 win for DLR. Food, company and the Ringwood beer made up for the match loss.
8th March - 2nd Team lost away to Dorchester 2 ~ 1-4
- Ross lost 1-3
- Allan won 3-0
- Simon lost 0-3
- Keith lost 1-3
- Amesha lost 0-3
3rd March - 1st Team lost away at Two Riversmeet 2 ~ 1-4
- Sam lost 2-3
- Ben lost 0-3
- Gary lost 0-3
- Allan lost 0-3
- Lee won 3-1
Another 1-4 loss, but not surprising really given the injury plagued squad we now have!! Rob - knees, hips & shoulder, Lewis - wrist, Gary - torn calf and hamstring, Lee - back problems and Al whacked his knee on the gym equipment yesterday and was limping about (he should see the manager and get that equipment sorted out!).
- Sam - Had a great chance to beat Charlie Campbell when he went 2-1 ahead and but for a poor call by the marker would have been 8-8 in the fourth. However tiredness and cramp got the better of him in the fifth and he went down 2-3. A great effort though.
- Ben - Was unlucky not to get a game or two off of Adam Scott, he was 8-4 in the second game and 7-6 in the third. However Adam always had a bit extra and some luck (a few front wall nicks) when it mattered and Ben lost out 0-3.
- Gary - Did a good impression of Rob (played on one leg!!) due to a torn calf muscle. After losing the first two games 1-9, 1-9, he rallied in the third to lead 5-4, but was never really in with a chance of winning and lost 0-3.
- Allan - Also limping around he never quite got to grips with the very cold court and also went down 0-3
- Lee - Roped in to play at the last minute Lee played very conservatively to look after his back. After losing the first game he played a much better length/width and put away a lot of volley drops (especially off of his opponents service, who continue to serve in the same place time after time and watch Lee drop it into the front corner!). Lee eventually running out a comfortable winner 3-1.
If we can find 5 fit players the next match is at home to BSC 3 on 10th March. - GB
3rd March - 3rd Team WON at home to West Hants 6 ~ 4-1
- Richard won 3-1
- Andy lost 0-3
- Brian won 3-0
- Dan won 3-2
- Tom won 3-1
Another good win to take us to 4th in the table. Dan had a tough 3~2 win that was made interesting by using a single spot ball because the courts were colder than usual as there was no heating at the club. Tom had another good win. 3~1.
Brian played a controlled game to dominate this 3~0 win. Andy can up against a young player who’s speed around the court won the first game with ease, Andy changed his game and took a 7~2 lead but was just unable to close it out and lost this 9~10 the 3rd started off with Andy out manoeuvring his opponent again but youth prevailed to win this match 3~0. Richard’s 3~1 win was a strange game to watch His opponent was a very skillful one shot player which showed in the 2nd but the other games, if he had more than a 5 stroke rally he became out of breath and then lost the next few points as he would not move.
24th February - 2nd Team lost at home to DLR 1 ~ 2-3
- Ross won 3-1
- Allan lost 2-3
- Mark won 3-0
- Anthony lost 2-3
- Amesha lost 0-3
An unfortunate loss against the league leaders, with Lee and Simon having to pull out at the last minute with injuries, with them the team would probably have won. - GB
22nd February - 1st Team lost away at JPB 2 ~ 1-4
- Sam won 3-2
- Rob lost 0-3
- Ben lost 2-3
- Allan lost 0-3
- Lee lost 0-3
A 1-4 loss to league leaders and likely title winners JPB 2. With Gary and Lewis unavailable again due to injuries Allan and Lee stepped up to the first team.
- Sam - Had another good win coming back from 1-2 down to beat Anthony Sandach 3-2 for the second time this season. The hard hitting long rallies took their toll on both players before Sam got the better of his opponent.
- Rob - Suffering from multiple ailments and looking distinctly lacklustre Rob didn't play anywhere near his best. Mike James took full advantage of Rob's inability to cover the court and quickly won the match 3-0.
- Ben - Had a tough match against Ollie Cognard made all the tougher by some poor marking decisions going against him at critical times. He recovered twice to get back on terms at 1-1 and 2-2, and was 6-3 up in the fifth before Ollie won a string of points to win the game 9-6.
- Allan - Against an ever improving Steve Quick (following his knee op) Allan had his work cut out and so it proved. Steve proved very adept at cutting out Allan's cross court shots and won 3-0.
- Lee - Had a great chance to take out John Pitt, but fluffed his lines at 8-6 up in the first and second games before losing both 8-10! With the match lost and his back again giving him problems Lee conceded when 4-6 down in the third.
Hopefully Gary and perhaps Lewis will be back for next week's league & cup double header at Two Riversmeet 2. - GB
17th February - 1st Team lost at home to Ferndown 2 ~ 2-3
- Sam lost 0-3
- Rob lost 2-3
- Ben won 3-0
- Gary lost 2-3
- Allan won 3-0
Yet another 2-3 loss that could have been a 4-1 win!.
- Sam - Had a very tough match against the undefeated Ross Graham. Sam played well, but ross always had the edge when it matted with some incredible drop shots.
- Rob - After 4 weeks off Rob did well to come back from 0-2 down to level the match at 2-2. At 8-2 up in the fifth it looked like a remarkable win was on the cards, however his opponent fought back, leveled at 8-8 and eventually won the game 10-8.
- Ben - Had an easy match after his opponent injured his back in the first game and struggled with getting to drop shots. Ben ran out an easy winner 3-0.
- Gary - Starting off slow Gary was quickly 0-2 down and the match looked all over. However he fought back to save two match points in the third game, win that game and the fourth to level at 2-2. A calf strain, sustained in the third game, limited his movement in the fifth and he unfortunately went down 2-9 and lost the match 2-3.
- Allan - After his defeat at Esporta the night before this was a slightly easier match for Allan. His retrieving and cross court lobs (the greasy walls!!) confused his opponent and he had a comfortable win 3-0.
A tough loss in a match we should have won, however the team is still mid table with a w4 & l6 record. - GB
17th February - 3rd Team WON at home to Milford 2 ~ 3-2
- Stuart won 3-1
- Lee won 3-0
- Richard won 3-2
- Andy won 3-1
- Tom won 3-0
Good team result last night against Milford 2 only dropped 3 points - Team Stuart, Lee, Andy, Brian, Tom.
I marked Tom’s match and at first I thought I was seeing double as his opponent was the same build, about the same age, had the same hair cut, beard and to cap it all they played a similar game. Hence the score line in the first 10/9, after losing the first by this small margin Tom dominated the second to make it one a piece. The match then seesawed back and forth and by the fifth Tom got the better of him and won this quite easily, 3~2 win
On the other court there was another five setter being played, this time Brian was unable to clinch a very competitive fifth but got 2 valuable points 2~3. match score was now one a piece.
Lee was next on court with Ian CB who said to me ‘see you in 15 mins’, Lee took a little bit longer to win 3~0. He worked hard and is starting to move around the court a lot better which caught Ian off guard who looked up to his team mates to say what else can I do.
Andy had his own battle with Mark Weldon who has only lost 2 matches all season. Andy won the first and was very close to taking the 2nd but having put so much effort into these games Andy was then unable to play the quality shots that won him the first and the valuable point. He lost 1-3.
Stuart was to give us the overall win with a 10/9 9/0 9/1 win and the five bonus points. He made his opponent work so hard in the first, that the next 2 games he was only able to get 1point.
An enjoyable evening made better for seeing Dave Airey who is looking to get back on court in the future. - JB
16th February - 2nd Team lost away at Esporta 1 ~ 0-5
- Ross lost 0-3
- Allan lost 1-3
- Mark lost 0-3
- Simon lost 0-3
- Anthony lost 1-3
A tough match with three new (ish) players at Esporta making it a hard night for the 2nd Team. Only Allan and Anthony managed to get a game! made all the worse by GB telling Mark that it would be a closer match, how wrong can you be! - GB
10th February - 2nd Team WON at HOME to Milford 1 ~ 4-1
- Ross Won 3-2
- Allan lost 2-3
- Lee won 3-0
- Simon won 3-1
- Anthony Won 3-1
A great win and only 1 point dropped (by the New Boy!) ......
- Ross - Had a fantastic win against a very strong junior player from Hampshire (Cameron Kavanagh) who had a pld 9 won 9 record until this match. Coming back from 1-2 down Ross played great controlled squash with some excellent drops thrown in to win 3-2.
- Allan - Once he stopped playing Racketball and realised it was a Squash match Al quickly went in to a 2-1 lead, however his opponent hit back with some ungettable drops and won the last two games.
- Lee - Had a very comfortable win only dropping 4 points, his power hitting and volley drop shots (mostly into the nick!) proving far too good for his opponent!
- Simon - Lost the first game but then got going and won the next three to win 3-1
- Anthony - After an easy first game Anthony let his opponent back in to win the second, but then, like Simon, got back on track to win the next two and take the match 3-1
GB
3rd February - 2nd Team lost at home to Hamworthy 1 (cup) ~ 1-4
- Ross lost 2-3
- Allan lost 0-3
- Mark won 3-0
- Simon lost 2-3
- Anthony lost 2-3
So unlucky to lose 1-4 in a very close match ......
- Ross - came back from 0-2 down only to lose against to a very good No. 1
- Allan - showing some signs of 'rustiness', but still played some good Squash
- Mark - a surprise win against a very good opponent who hadn't quite cottoned on to the fact that he shouldn't hit the ball back to Mark!
- Simon - lost, but was 2-1 up and 5-2 up in the fifth!
- Anthony - lost 2-3 in a very topsy turvy match (8-10, 10-9, 9-1, 0-9, 0-9!)
GB
27th January - 2nd Team WON at home to Two Riversmeet 3 ~ 4-1
- Ross won 3-0
- Lee lost 0-3
- Mark won 3-1
- Simon won 3-0
- Anthony won 3-2
25th January - 3rd Team WON away at Bridport 2 ~ 5-0
- Stuart won 3-1
- Lee won 3-0
- Richard won 3-2
- Andy won 3-1
- Tom won 3-0
After a long wait to get started our first players went on court, Andy was the first to win a game followed shortly after by Tom with the same 9/6 score, both were keeping pace with each other and it looked like they were going to win the second at the same time, but Tom had an unlucky call that would have given him the game 9/4 but had to continue for another few more points to get the win. He then went on to win the 3rd and the match 3~0. Andy lost the 3rd to a very fit Lynda Staddon but in the 4th he took control and wrong footed her too many times with a reverse boast to take the win.3~1.
Lee played a well controlled 3~0 match that had some very long rallies that frustrated his opponent into making too many mistakes trying to shorten the game. Richard made a bad start going 0~2 down to a much improved Ed Mamanta, in the 3rd Richard getting his second wind and game face on changed the pace and was able to drive his opponent to the back of the court, he then went on to win the next 3 games in style. It was up to Stuart to make it a clean sweep. He did not disappoint with his speed around the court and the played for nicks (so he told me, I don’t think) came up trumps with a 3~1 win that gave the team a 20~4 win.
Food, beer and company were good. The win will take us to 4th in the table for a short time. - JB
13th January - 1st Team WON at home to Purbeck 1 ~ 4-1
- Sam won 3-1
- Rob won 3-1
- Ben won 3-1
- Richard lost 0-3
- W/O won 3-0
With Gary (Thrombophlebitis) and Lewis (wrist) both missing thru injury this looked like it might be a very tight match for the team. Fortunately Purbeck could only muster four players and Richard Edgeley (many thanks. Ed) pitched up at very short notice to replace Lewis.
As I wasn't at the match I can't provide my usual 'detailed' reports, but ......
- An excellent win for Sam at No.1 continuing his very good form in league matches
- Another morale boosting win for Rob, obviously finding a few 'less mobile' opponents at No's 2 & 3
- Good to see Ben back on form and winning again after the Xmas excesses
- Richard lost 0-3, but looking at the game scores it was a far from a one-sided match
Unfortunately the evening was marred by some appalling behaviour on the balcony from the Purbeck team captain during Rob's match. - GB
13th January - 2nd Team WON at home to BSC 4 ~ 3-2
- Ross won 3-2
- Lee lost 1-3
- Simon won 3-1
- Anthony lost 1-3
- Linda won 3-0
A very good win for the 2nd team .....
- A great win for Ross coming back from 0-2 to win 3-2
- Welcome back to Lee after nearly 6 months out with a back injury. He had to retire after being knocked over and falling heavily on his back during the 3rd game, but fortunately there is no immediate damage.
- A good win for Simon at No.3
- Anthony lost 1-3, but the match was very close and Dave Bissett is a very experienced player who would (I think) usually play much higher up the order
- A fantastic 3-0 win for Linda at No.5, filling in at very short notice, which sealed the teams victory. - GB
11th January - 3rd Team WON away at Springfield 1 ~ 4-1
- Richard won 3-1
- Andy won 3-1
- Brian won 3-0
- Darren won 3-0
- Paul lost 1-3
The 3rd Team managed a good 18 point win at one of the best venues in the league. Richard was in his usual snarling form. His opponent tried to out hit him which is rarely the right policy. Paul, meanwhile, was having a bad night with his legs appearing to be stuck in treacle. This meant that his normal sweet racket skills were spoilt because he was hardly ever fully in position. The team would have backed him to beat his opponent nine times out of ten but unfortunately this was that tenth occasion. Darren was his usual competitive self. His was the most comfortable win of the evening. Andy won quite comfortably too but somehow contrived to lose a game. Hitting six successive loose cross-court shots for his opponent to kill had a lot to do with it! Brian had three tight games but always stayed the more accurate. The food and post-match socialising was excellent. - AG
6th January - 1st Team lost away at Hamworthy 1 ~ 2-3
- Sam lost 1-3
- Lewis won 3-2
- Rob won 3-2
- Ben lost 0-3
- Gary lost 1-3
A fourth 2-3 defeat of the season in another very close match. A change to the playing order moved Sam up to No. 1. Lewis moved up to No. 2 in an attempt to see him lose a team match (he hasn't lost for about 2 years now!!) and in an attempt to see Rob win a match or two he dropped down to No. 3.
First on court both Gary and Ben who looked like they had over indulged extensively during the Xmas & New Year hols. Both played way below their best form, looked lethargic and both lost, Ben 0-3 and Gary 1-3, putting the team 0-2 down. Not a good start!
Looking like he had been at the same party as Gary and Ben, Rob lost the first game of his match 5-9. However he recovered to win the second and should have won the third as well, but squandered a couple of game points before going down 9-10. Looking 'out on his feet' he managed to find some energy from somewhere and won the next two games to take the match 3-2.
Promoted to No. 2 Lewis found an opponent was was nearly as quick and fit as he is. The rallies were long, fast and had plenty of 'trick' shots (or miss-hits as they are known in Squash circles! :-)). At 2-2 and 3-5 down it looked like Lewis was finally going to lose a match, but his opponent suddenly crumbled and Lewis won 5 points on the bounce to lead 8-5 and after a couple of handouts he closed out the match to win 3-2. So 2-2 and all down to Sam, no pressure then!
Following the rest of teams lethargic example Sam gave up the first game 2-9. At 5-0 in the second he looked to have turned things around, but somehow he managed to lose it 6-9. In the third he went 6-1 up and this time closed out the game 9-7. Another 6-1 lead for Sam in the fourth game looked to be taking the match into a fifth, but playing some excellent winners his opponent came back and leveled the score at 8-8. Unfortunately Sam lost out 9-10 conceding an unfortunate stroke at 9-9 when the ball came back at him from the dodgy front wall corners that had provided some strange bounces all evening (there must be a plastering job there Sam. Ed).
So another 3-2 defeat, but as usual with the Hamworthy team all the matches were played in a great spirit with plenty of laughs and good company over dinner. Good luck to the 2nd Team who play them in the cup in February! :-( GB
6th January - 3rd Team away at West Hants 6 ~ 4-1
- Richard won 3-1
- Andy won 3-0
- Brian lost 0-3
- Darren won 3-2
- Paul won 3-0
I got there after the first matches had started and missed Richards’s first game and was told he was not doing too well. He then won the next 3 games as his opponent run out of steam.
Brian lost 0~3 to a young left hander, who went for everything; Brian tried to out manoeuvre him putting the ball to all corners of the court but the youngsters fitness paid off.
Paul made a confident start and carried on to a 3~0 win giving Weymouth a 2~1 advantage going into the last two matches. Darren had a dreadful start losing the first two games then settled into his game and came back to win the next 3 games and his match 3~2.
Andy playing another left hander Lorraine Page controlled the game and had quite an easy 3~0 win.
Good start to the year well done. - JB
7th December - 1st Team lost at home to Hamworthy 1 ~ 2-3
- Sam won 3-2
- Ben lost 1-3
- Ross lost 0-3
- Gary won 3-0
- Mark lost 0-3
Last week it was snow and ice, this week it was injuries! Rob tore a calf muscle while playing Sam on Monday and had to withdraw. Gary had an in-growing toe nail problem that required a Podiatrist, a scalpel, some other sharp pointy instruments and a great deal of pain before being able to play in the match. With Rob out, Mark stepped in at No. 5 and everyone else moved up a slot.
Mark and Gary went on first. I didn't see Mark's match, but apparently two consecutive nights squash was too much for his knees and he went down 0-3 to Ben Homer. Gary played some very good squash and adapted far better to the cold courts than his opponent (Paul Luther). Although it was never a comfortable win, the 3-0 scoreline did accurately reflect the control that Gary exerted during the match.
Ben's opponent (Chris Hayden) looked very good in the warm up and when he went 5-0 up in the first the result looked inevitable. However Ben recovered and although he lost the first game he went 8-4 up in the second before Chris fought back and won the game 10-8. Ben continue to play well in the third with some great retrieving shots and quickly won it 9-2. After a tight start to the fourth Chris got a few points clear and eventually won it 9-5 taking the match 3-1. A good effort from Ben and he deserved far more than a single game from the match.
Again I didn't see Ross's match, but after taking a 6-2 lead in the first game he didn't win much else and only managed 6 more points in the match before going down 0-3.
Playing at No. 1 for the first time, against an opponent who had only lost once in six outings this season, Sam looked to have his work cut out and having lost the first game 0-9 the writing was on the wall. Or was it? Sam made great come back and won the next two games 9-4, 9-5. He then lost the fourth due a rapidly deteriorating broken racket, his own fault having smacked it on the floor after losing the first game so badly. Mr Biles came to the rescue lending Sam his (winning) racket with which he got off to flier in the fifth and never looked back winning it 9-5 and the match 3-2. Having smacked the borrowed racket very hard against the wall during a long rally in the fifth Sam did turn and apologise to Gary who was watching at the back of court 1. The racket is being checked by experts (me) for any damage in case I need to start some litigation for compensation!
Another close defeat for the team, our third 2-3 this season! We are now mid table which isn't a bad return at the halfway point in the season. A couple of other things worth mentioning:
- The Hamworthy team were excellent company and played all the matches in the right spirit, hard, fair and with quite a few laughs.
- The 3rd Team squad had a get together last night and provided excellent support to the 1st Team when not playing squash themselves. Great to see Dave Airey at the club and we all wish him good luck on his road to recovery.
As it is that time of year again here are a few suggestions for Christmas presents for the 1st Team:
- Rob - new knees, hips, back, diet
- Sam - rackets (heavy unbreakable ones!)
- Ben - a little bit of luck on court
- Gary - a new big toe (hopefully being sorted by an operation on Thursday, this time with anaesthetic!)
- Ross - a small dose of aggression
- Lewis - an Usain Bolt t-shirt
- Lee - get back on a squash court
Happy Christmas and New Year to all, next match is on Thursday 6th Jan away at Hamworthy. GB
2nd December - 1st Team WON away at Purbeck 1 ~ 4-1
- Rob lost 1-3
- Sam won 3-0
- Lewis won 3-0
- Ben won 3-1
- Gary won 3-0
After some debate about traveling on the icy roads and snowy conditions the team went over to Purbeck. Gary in his 4x4 and the rest of the team in Sam's new 4x4 monster truck, which could well become the 'team bus', in preference to the four of them plus kit bags in Ben's Micra! In hindsight the roads were good and we had no problems in getting to the venue on time and as usual well before the home team arrived!
First up on court were Lewis and Ben. Lewis ran his opponent ragged and after narrowly winning the first 10-9 he took control and won the next two games 9-5, 9-0. Ben took some time in getting used to the warm fast court, as opposed to the current ice boxes at WS&FC, losing the first game 1-9. He then got going and won the next three games dropping only 6 points on the way to a 3-1 win. Rob did well against Peter Baczala narrowly losing the first 8-10 and then wining the second 9-3. However Peter then took control of the match and won the next two games for a 3-1 win for the home side. Sam played Peter's brother Andy Baczala and had a fine 3-0 win, he out played and out ran Andy who was on his last legs in the third game. Sam has now won 5 out 6 this season and as a reward will probably be promoted to No. 1 in the New Year so that Rob can have a rest and maybe win some matches! :-) Last on court Gary had a fairly comfortable match and won 3-0 dropping only three points in each game.
The team are now mid table with a won 3 lost 3 record in a very tight league and are only eighteen points behind league leaders JPB 2. Rob deserves special mention for scrapping together nearly enough change for his match fee, but even after a bail out, of Irish proportions, from Sam he still came up 12p short! (You owe me 12p. - Ed) - GB

- Rob lost 2-3
- Sam won 3-2
- Lewis won 3-1
- Ben lost 2-3
- Gary lost 0-3
10 points won, but it could so easily have been more. Rob came back from 0-2 1-8 to level his match at 2-2, but then ran out of steam and lost the fifth. Sam came back from 0-2 to win 3-2 (again!). Lewis drove his opponent to distraction with some impossible retrieves and won 3-1. Ben saved 7 match points in the fifth, but just couldn't win a point on his own serve and eventually lost 2-3. Gary played too loose and his opponent too accurately, hence the 0-3 scoreline! GB

Another win this time on the road against BSC 3, however they were very much under strength missing their No. 1 & 2 players. With the boiler not working the courts were cold and letting the ball go to the back of the court wasn't a good idea! Rob was first on and struggled in the first game as his opponent went for winners off of every shot, most of which came off. Rob then played the same game and although the rallies were short Rob was winning most of them and as his opponent put more and more into the tin he ran out a comfortable winner 3-1, his first win of the season. Sam seemed intent on giving Howard a good head start in the first two games of his match. He was down 0-6 in the first before winning 9-6 and 0-5 then 2-8 in the second before winning 9-8! A word in his ear from Ben that a good length followed by a drop shot was winning every time made the third game a bit more comfortable and he won 9-0 to take the match 3-0. Gary played U17 county player Liam Blaney, he never really looked in trouble and had a fairly straightforward 3-0 win. Playing an opponent who was very deft at drop shots Ross struggled and never really got going on the cold court and eventually lost out 1-3. Ben, now back to full fitness and playing some good Squash, was too quick and accurate for Martin Player. His power hitting around the court had Martin running to all four corners and although he dropped a game Ben never looked like losing and won 3-1. GB
11th November - 1st Team WON at home to Two Riversmeet 2 ~ 3-2
- Rob lost 1-3
- Sam lost 0-3
- Lewis won 3-0
- Ben won 3-1
- Gary won 3-1
Not as long or intense as last weeks match, but a good first win for the 1st team. Not quite up to the standard he has set himself in the last two matches Sam went down 0-3 to Adam Scott. However he could easily have won the first two games and caused a major upset. Ben had a good result against Stuart Belbin (recently moved from Milford to 2RMT) winning 3-1. Although he dropped a game he was never really in trouble. Gary won, but only after a major scare. After comfortably winning the first game he went down 1-7 in the second game before getting back to 7-7 then lost it 7-9. In the third game he was behind 0-6 before winning 9 points on the bounce to take a 2-1 lead. The fourth game was a bit of a formality with Gary winning 9-4 taking the match 3-1. At No. 3 Lewis, playing for the first time for the team, played his usual brand of 'thrash and dash' Squash to which his opponent had no reply, He won a good match 3-0 and secured the teams first win of the season. Against Charlie Campbell Rob started of like a train. Playing really tight squash up and down the walls and with some great drop shots he won the first game 9-1. At this point I went off to shower in hindsight Rob should have stopped and got changed as well as he lost the next 3 games for 3 points, but credit to Charlie for changing his game and turning the match around. 4th November - 1st Team lost at home to JPB 2 ~ 2-3
- Rob lost 0-3
- Sam won 3-2
- Ben lost 2-3
- Ross lost 1-3
- Gary won 3-2
A tight match that we could so easily have won against a very good JPB side. The matches were all very good and we didn't finish until 22:50! Rob lost to a very good played from the Army who will hopefully be tied to their 1st team by the time of the return fixture! Ross lost 1-3 to Olivier Cognard in a good match, Olivier's experience helping him thru the last 2 games. Gary and Ben both had very long 5 set matches. Ben just lost out 2-3 to Mike James and Gary won 10-9 in the fifth against Steve Quick after 75+ minutes on court (bloody hell my joints are aching even more than Rob's this morning! Ed :-)). Last on court at 21:40 and having just marked Gary's match, Sam got off to a slow start and lost the first game. However he leveled the match at 1-1 before going 1-2 down. Sam then 'dug in' and won the next 2 games 10-8 10-8 , the last game an epic with both players squandering match points, Sam winning the match 3-2 in around 70 minutes. Not a bad result in the end and a valuable 9 points, the JPB boys were very good company as usual and all the matches were played in the right spirit. GB
4th November - 3rd Team lost away at BSC 5 ~ 1-4
- Richard E. lost 0-3
- Simon lost 0-3
- Andy lost 0-3
- Dan lost 2-3
- Paul won 3-0
Bournemouth Squash 5 were as powerful as any team so far. Rich E, Simon and Andy all struggled against quality opponents without even winning a single game. Dan lost a cracking five setter. His opponent was of exceptional standard for a number four in division five. Paul managed a consolation win for the team. The beer, Hobgoblin (currently my favourite beer! - Ed), was very good. AG
2nd November - 2nd Team lost away at DLR 1 ~ 1-4
- Ross lost 0-3
- Gary lost 1-3
- Chris won 3-1
- Simon lost 0-3
- Anthony lost 1-3
A match best forgotten with only Chris emerging with any credit, although the food and company were good. GB
21st October - 2nd Team won at home to Esporta 1 ~ 4-1
- Lewis won 3-2
- Ross won 3-0
- Mark won 3-2
- Simon won 3-0
- Anthony lost 1-3
A great result for the 2nd team in beating a strong Esporta side. This was Esporta's first defeat since the first match of last season when they fielded a weakened side and lost to our 3rd team in Div 5 (including cup matches)! Glad to see Mr Long finally won a 5 set match! The 2nd team are currently top of Div 3 with a 4W & 1L record. GB
21st October - 3rd Team lost away at Milford 2 ~ 2-3
- Richard E. won 3-2
- Andy lost 1-3
- Brian lost 0-3
- Dan won 3-2
- Paul lost 1-3
The match began well on one court and not so well on the other. Brian lost 0-3 to a classy opponent who normally plays at a higher level. Dan started superbly, racing into a 2-0 lead. His opponent fought back to 2-2 and Dan had to dig deep to achieve a worthy win. Andy lost to a tricky shot-player and, although he might have done better than picking up one point, he is moving closer to full fitness. Paul won his first game but just failed to keep the upper hand as fatigue bit and his steady opponent picked up points. That left Richard with the task of taking on his best opponent so far. He fought well even as he tired and his competitive spirit kept him in touch until his opponent cracked. It was a classic example of the importance in squash of playing ‘not to lose’. His unbeaten run continues. AG
21st October - 1st Team lost away at Ferndown 2 ~ 1-4
- Rob lost 1-3
- Sam won 3-1
- Gary lost 0-3
- Ben L lost 1-3
- Walkover lost 0-3
Not a great start to the season, but Div 2 will be exceptionally tough this year, this very good Ferndown side have lost their opening two matches! With only four players our hopes of a win were small. Rob's many and varied injuries stopped him from giving his very good opponent a better game. Sam played exceptionally well with some outstanding retrieving to win 3-1. Gary never got to grips with the very fast courts, over-hitting length balls and under-hitting drops! Ben did well to pick up a game after a lengthy absence from the courts due to getting married, having a honeymoon in Jamaica and recovering from a foot injury. GB
14th October - 3rd Team won away at Dorchester 4 ~ 5-0
- Richard E. won 3-1
- Andy won 3-1
- Brian won 3-0
- Dan won 3-1
- Paul won 3-0
Paul playing in his second match had a bit of a nervous start, but pulled it together and cruised to a 3 love win.
Brian also had a good 3 love win.
Dan came up against Colin England and it looked like it was going to be a repeat of their last meeting when Colin talked him out of the match. However after losing the first game Richard was sent down to give Dan a stern talking too, who then came back on court to win the next 3 games, dropping only one point to a very surprised Colin.
Andy had a tougher game still recovering from his chest infection did not disappoint with a 3~1 win.
Richard came up against one of my junior u19 players (Nick Watts) who broke his 3 love winning streak to take a game off of him. JB

- Gary won 3-0
- Ross won 3-0
- Mark lost 2-3
- Simon won 3-2
- Darren lost 0-3
2nd Team had a good win last night. Gary played really well and won quite comfortably 3-0 wronging footing his opponent on many occasions, who didn't look very happy to have lost. Ross played exceptionally well and was very focused. His opponent was twice his size in height and weight, but Ross moved him all over he court and he got very frustrated that the ball just kept on coming back. Simon won after his opponent picked up an injury when 2-1 up. Simon took advantage and took the last 2 games for a couple of points. Mr Long, as usual, went 0-2 down and came back to 2-2 then lost the 5th from 8-4 up 8-10! The second time he has lost the 5th game 8-10 in 3 matches so far this season! Darren played well, but his opponent just had the edge and he went down 0-3. GB

- Richard E. won 3-0
- Andy won 3-2
- Brian won 3-2
- Dan won 3-2
- Paul won 3-0
Another perfect match for the 3rd Team taking maximum points again. First on court Dan came back from 1-2 down to win 3-2 and Brian won a tense match 3-2 after being 2-1 up. Richard won 3-0, his opponent never quite coming to terms with his hard hitting. Paul Griffin, making his first appearance of the season, swapped his Racketball racket for a Squash racket and won his match quite comfortably 3-0. His power hitting and great touch gave his opponent no opportunity to get into the match. Andy finished off the evening with a 3-2 win, but kept the crowd entertained but squandering match points in the 4th and 5th games before finally winning the fifth game 9-7! - GB
